Just some of the reasons why you need an attorney in a divorce case

  1. This is one of the most emotional of cases. If you can’t talk to your spouse now how are you going to work out a divorce with them? You need someone who can help negotiate a fair property settlement and child custody agreement. You need someone who can help control and reduce the amount of stress you are under. The attorney will help reduce your stress by doing the hard legal work and letting you concentrate on your job and family!
  2. Divorce law is complex. If you have no property, no children, and have not been married very long and you are experienced at doing complex research and writing then you might be able to do a divorce on your own. However you will be held to the same standard as an attorney and if you mess up tough…
If you have a child or property or a reasonable income you simply need an attorney. This is not an area where self help will pay off. It is also not an area where you can just keep trying until you get it right. Failure to do things right the first time can have serious consequences. There are rules that have to be followed and failure to do so will delay or possibly even get your case dismissed.
  3. Getting it done right the first time. Divorce is unpleasant! Do you really want to have to redo it latter on because something was done incorrectly?
